Understanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The UK government aims to achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2050, and one of the approaches is through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This new scheme has replaced the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which came to an end on March 31, 2022.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants of up to £7,500 to support the installation of low carbon heating systems to help property owners in England and Wales. These heating systems include Air Source Heat Pumps, Ground Source Heat Pumps, Water Source Heat Pumps and Bio-mass Boilers for rural properties.
Benefits of BUS – How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help you.
If you reside in England or Wales, you might qualify for a government subsidy to assist you in transitioning from an oil, gas, or electric heating system to a heat pump or biomass boiler. Each property can apply for one grant, with the following amounts available:
- Up to £7,500 for an Air source heat pump.
- Up to £7,500 for a ground source heat pump.
- Up to £5,000 for a biomass boiler*.
These subsidies are part of the “Help to Heat” initiative, which offers various government-sponsored schemes, including the Home Upgrade Grant and the Energy Company Obligation. However, most of these schemes are specifically targeted at low-income households.
* NOTE – The Grant is exclusively available to Biomass Boilers based in rural areas, in properties not linked to the gas grid, and possessing an emissions certificate confirming minimal polluting emissions. Biomass boilers installed in self-build properties do not qualify for this scheme.
