Solid wall insulation

Approximately one-third of the heat lost in a home without insulation escapes through the walls. By effectively insulating the cavity walls, you can conserve energy and reduce expenses on your heating bill.

When you insulate the walls in your home, it creates a barrier that prevents cold air from entering and keeps warm air inside, resulting in warmer homes and improved energy efficiency.

In the UK, houses generally fall into two categories concerning their wall construction: solid walls or cavity walls.

If your house was constructed after the 1920s, it is likely to have cavity walls. A cavity wall consists of two walls with a gap in between, known as the cavity. The outer layer is typically made of brick, while the inner layer is made of brick or concrete block.
On the other hand, houses built before the 1920s are more likely to have solid walls. A solid wall does not have a cavity; instead, each wall is a single solid structure usually made of brick or stone.

Cavity wall

If your home has cavity walls, the bricks will usually have an even pattern with all the bricks laid lengthways.

Solid Wall

In homes with solid walls, the bricks will have an alternating pattern, where some bricks are laid across the wall, making the smaller ends visible from the outside.

If the brickwork of your home has been covered or is not directly visible, you can determine the wall type by measuring the width. Examine a window or door on one of your external walls and follow these guidelines:

  • If the brick wall is more than 260mm thick, it is likely to have a cavity.
  • A narrower wall, usually less than 260mm thick, is probably solid.
  • Stone walls may be thicker than 260mm but are typically solid.
  • Some houses may have different wall structures, such as steel-frame or timber-framed buildings, or prefabricated concrete walls. For these cases, it is best to consult a specialist insulation installer for proper advice.

By using these measurements and observations, you can gain insights into the type of wall your home has, helping you make informed decisions about insulation and energy efficiency improvements.

Costs and savings

The installation costs of solid wall insulation for a typical 3-bedroom, semi-detached house can vary as follows:

  • External wall insulation: approximately £11,000.
  • Internal wall insulation: approximately £7,500.
Potential Savings:
